Martial Arts of Tucson Jiu-jitsu
Martial Arts of Tucson's, Shiden'issen Jujutsu is an original and diverse martial discipline. It is a style which focuses on modern-practical self-defense and traditional techniques. Its fighting method consists of throws, immobilizations, grappling and submissions. Jujutsu was a warriors art, practiced by the Samurai of Japan. Over the centuries hundreds of Jujutsu styles evolved. Because of the devastating nature of jujutsu techniques, it was not at all suited to sport competition. In modern times, Jujutsu can refer to a martial art in which all aspects of combat are taught together.

Shiden'issen Jujutsu is an amalgam of the traditional and the modern.

martial arts of tucson. Shiden'issen Jujutsu.Jujutsu is the art of unarmed combat. A great emphasis is placed on maintaining the attackers flow of momentum (which follows from the art's name), in which ju connotes pliability and suppleness.

Movements tend to emphasize circularity, and capitalize on an attacker's momentum and openings in order to place a joint in a compromised position or to break balance as preparatory for a take-down or throw.

In SiJ, a great emphasis is placed on live training, called Randori.

Martial Arts of Tucson - Sensei Ryan Maza - Shiden'issen Jujutsu The name

The English translation of the Japanese phrase, Shiden'issen means, a flash of the sword or a flash of lightning. The word Jujutsu means, the gentle art. Indeed Jujutsu technique is anything but gentle! This is actually a Japanese euphemism relating to the philosophy that force should not be met with force, but instead to win in combat you must use the opponent's force against them.

SiJ is a unique culmination of Japanese Jujutsu, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Judo and Aikido. All of which share similar martial principles.

Shiden'issen brang forth an original name unique to its dojo. In the same fashion different schools of the same / similar art in Japan are called, ryu. Referring to a school of a specific martial discipline unique to that dojo. SiJ needed its unique name to differentiate itself from other styles of Jujutsu.

Martial Arts of Tucson - Sensei Ryan Maza - Shiden'issen Jujutsu Filming has begun on new SiJ video

The minds behind Martial Arts of Tucson’s Shiden’issen Jujutsu program are pleased to announce that filming has commenced on their new promotional video, tentatively titled “SiJ2,” the long-awaited follow up to the program’s original internet sensation, “Shiden’issen Jujutsu: Arts of the Samurai.” Like its predecessor, the new video will deliver a thrilling showcase of SiJ’s uniquely diverse core curriculum of throwing, grappling, joint lock and submission techniques. To set it apart, the new video will also provide viewers with some much needed upgrades.

Martial Arts of Tucson - Shiden'issen JujutsuThe most notable addition will be an original song, currently in development by composer Rich Katz, which aims to stylishly complement the more dynamic visual approach to the video’s equally intense action. The song will also circumvent YouTube’s stringent copyright policy that left the first video without a score on that site. Although, the original can still be seen here.

Martial Arts of Tucson - Sensei Ryan Maza - Shiden'issen JujutsuAmong the other updated plans for the video, viewers can expect a more personal focus on the special camaraderie that makes SiJ more of a family than just a class. The audience will also be treated to a clearer picture of how techniques are taught and learned, a rare glimpse of a belt-awarding ceremony, and a more cinematic opening segment that will introduce one by one the dedicated Jujutsuka of SiJ. And to properly memorialize and convey the action, the entire video will be shot in hi-definition.

To date, the original video has garnered over 85,000 views on YouTube. Expectations for “SiJ2” are already soaring above and beyond this soon-to-be modest achievement, so stay tuned.

Martial Arts of Tucson - Sensei Ryan Maza - Shiden'issen Jujutsu Filming continues on SiJ2

Martial Arts of Tucson's - Shiden'issen Jujutsu group, continued their filming momentum yesterday by recording the first of their lively training - Randori.

Randori is a term used in Jujutsu (and other Japanese martial arts) to describe free-style practice or sparring. The term literally means "chaos taking" or "grasping freedom," implying a freedom from the structured practice of kata. One-on-one sparring where partners attempt to resist and counter each other's techniques.

This night was specifically targeted at 'Nage Waza' or Throwing technique. Whereas the goal is to throw your opponent to the ground, hopefully landing a clean throw using technique. Eventhough the cameras were rolling, the students were oblivious to it, thus capturing some astounding competitive footage. The following are screenshots from the live video footage:

Martial Arts of Tucson - Jujutsu Sensei - Ryan Maza Martial Arts of Tucson

The Martial Arts of Tucson Dojo recently received the unique advertising opportunity to display a huge back-lit ad, towering 10' tall in Tucson's Park Place Mall. The owner of the dojo called forth upon the Shiden'issen Jujutsu crew to take charge in it's design, message and production.

Coming up with a catchy ad for a martial arts dojo was a tough one, Maza commented. "Besides the typical ad you see frequently of a kid kicking, the lady with boxing gloves and the guy with muscles...I felt this was a distinct opportunity to try and show a deeper and more vast look into Jujutsu...and the martial arts." said Maza. Deciding to stick with the slick branding of the Martial Arts of Tucson website, Sensei Maza decided to portray the, 'Insight. Adapt. Subdue' theme--which happens to be an ongoing motif on the website.

Insight - represents the origin of the techniques of Jujutsu concepts and theories. Insight is understanding the full gamut of the art. Without insight, one cannot respond clearly and with haste.

Adapt - represents the ideology of the Japanese- Inyodo. (Chinese Yin and Yang). Complementary opposites within a greater whole. NO technique is fail-proof. There is a counter and reversal to everything. Being able to 'Adapt' to a martial situation, is an important attainable goal as a martial artist.

Subdue - represents the final goal of Jujutsu. It is not to better one self. It is not a 'Do' - a spiritual way. It is a Martial discipline of war. The goal is to Subdue the opponent, through means of superior technique.

The imagery

"I essentially wanted to capture a recognizable association with each word. One in which was visibly spectacular, but also was in tandem with the word. I decided to portray a swift sword strike and movement for the Insight portion. A massive throw called Tai Otoshi for the Adapt section. And finally, how could one not recognize a rear strangulation (ushiro hadaka shime) for Subdue? You can't. I also wanted to feature one of my prized female students...showing that women can do Jujutsu too!" Sensei Maza commented.
